President's Message

2012

New Beginnings and New Directions

This is a time for looking ahead. The past is just that, the past, it defines what has happened but it does not have to define the future. The last two years (at least) have been a rough ride for the residential design market. We know all to well what has happened to our businesses, friends and associates. So let’s not dwell on the misfortunes of the past, but rather let’s use them as a foundation to build the future for our businesses and our industry as a whole.

The last twenty years plus, in general, has been a great journey for most of the design world. Except for a few blips in the financial world, material ups and downs and marked world and national events, we have ridden a wave of prosperity that landed us on the shore of how do we survive.

There are many scholars wiser and more knowledgeable than I, who can account for where we have been and where we will go. They are sure of their theories and answers, but we must deal in the real world of what we do know, the world of here and now.

It may be safe to say that the residential building industry will never be again as it has been in the past. That being said, we as design professionals must be prepared for wherever this changing world of design is going to take us. In this effort to get ready for the future, we will lay a foundation that will prepare us to not only survive, but to prosper.

The Executive Board for the Georgia Society of The American Institute of Building Design has laid out a plan for this year that will bring us to an understanding of how we must approach the coming years ahead. As a first step this year we will look at changing design philosophies for clients, material uses, and business practices. As always we will work with our valued and consistent supporters from the products world, but we will unite that knowledge with the design implementation that leads us to the new approaches that I just mentioned.

In other words, we will work together in how to use the products that are presented to us to achieve the best aesthetics in balance, proportion and innovation as well as using the technology that makes the product valuable to our clients.

We will invite associated industries to help us understand the paths before us. There will be guest speakers from the world of finance, real estate, and construction. We will visit sites and bring our members and their families together for social interaction as well as the knowledge base that we all seek to find.

The Georgia Society of the American Institute of Building Design is a worthy association from which we all have gained and from which we will all continue to gain. Moreover, we are a family of designers, associates, suppliers, and students that must support each other and move this Society into a future that continues to open new vistas and opportunities for us all.

As always your Executive Board is here to support and help you, so let us hear from you, as we move forward in these New Beginnings and New Directions. Have a Happy and Prosperous New Year!!!!

Sincerely,
Sam Liberti
